All species of jellyfish can sting but some species, for example, the moon jellyfish, only give a very mild sting. The most harmful species of jellyfish that we get in Irish waters are the Lion’s Mane jellyfish, the Portuguese Man O’ War and the Purple Stinger. These jellyfish are more dangerous because their venom is more toxic or in the case of the Lion’s Mane jellyfish it is because they are so big and can sting your entire body if you swim into them. The Lion’s Mane jellyfish can be as big as the lid of your wheelie bin!! The most harmful type of jellyfish in the world are the box jellyfish. These can be found in Australia, the Phillipenes and other tropical countries. Some people have died after being stung by box jellyfish. Luckily, we don’t have any box jellyfish in Ireland, because the water is too cold for them.
