So gold itself is an element wth the symbol Au. 24 Karat gold is pure Au. It is sometimes mixed with other metals like copper or silver to make gold with a lower karat number like 9 karat gold. Gold is very soft by itself so it is easier to scratch and break 24 karat gold than 9 karat gold as the extra metals make it stronger 🙂
